France says it will contribute more than $20 million US dollars towards a project to treat wastewater in French Polynesia.
The funding announcement was made by the French minister for overseas territories, Christian Estrosi, who is about to wrap up a week-long visit to the territory.
The mayor of Papeete, Michel Buillard, says the water treatment facilities will cost more than 60 million US dollars.
He says he hopes the project will be completed in about five years.
Tahiti’s capital has no communal water treatment or sewerage plant despite a population of about 100,000.
