Severn Trent Metering Services, a supplier of intelligent water metering, has announced the certification of its range of SmartMeter£ water meters to the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID). The MID allows electronic water meters using fluidic oscillators to be used in Europe for water metering.
The first electronic, battery-powered residential water meters to receive European Commission approval according to the MID were the SM150 and SM250 family of SmartMeter water meters from Severn Trent Metering Services
Effective on November 1, 2006, the MID covers a number of measuring instrument types including gas, electricity and water meters, which are responsible for generating up to £2bn in sales per week in the United Kingdom.
The principal aim of the Directive is to create common standards for the manufacture of measuring instruments throughout Europe. Meters receiving MID approval are able to be used in any other EU country irrespective of which EU country granted the approval.
Instruments covered by the directive must undergo conformity assessment before they are placed on the European market. Severn Trent Metering Services has previously received accreditation to the OIML R49 standard, which forms a major part of the requirements for MID approval. Additional assessment has ensured that the water meters meet all of the requirements of the MID.
SmartMeters employ fluidic oscillation technology for lifelong accuracy and are unaffected by grit and air in the water network. The leading edge water meters provide a range of functions to monitor leakage, supply data and prevent meter tampering, helping water companies optimize their networks. Meters are available in a variety of data output formats for integration into Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) systems.
