Project had impact on the area’s environmental protection in addition to greatly improving the quality of life for people in the region

As part of the Second Shanghai Sewerage Project (SSPII), Smith & Loveless, Inc. manufactured eight Pista Grit Removal Systems for one of the largest headworks treatment system in China.

The Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute, in conjunction with the Shanghai Municipal Sewerage Co., specified the use of the Pista Grit Removal System to serve as the high-tech grit removal mechanism for SSPII—Bai Long Gang Wastewater Treatment Plant Works.

The SSPII—Bai Long Gang Wastewater Treatment Plant Works serves a population of close to 4 million people, treating the voluminous wastewater flow of 1.6 million m3/d. Treating this flow are eight Model 70.0A Pista Grit Chambers, eight top-mounted Pista Turbo Grit Pumps, eight Pista Grit Concentrators and four Grit Screw Conveyors.

Impact of system

The treatment of wastewater before discharging to local rivers, estuaries, and bays has become a major issue of China. The pollution of its waterways has become a significant environmental concern for both quality of life and future business expansions.

The SSPII was the second major environmental water project in Shanghai, following the completion of the smaller First Shanghai Sewerage Project. One goal of the SSPII was to effectively improve the water quality of the mid- and upper-reaches of the Huangpu River.

The project has had impact on the area’s environmental protection and Shanghai’s investment environment, in addition to greatly improving the quality of life for people in this region.

Funding

Funding for the SSPII was approved by the Chinese State Planning Commission after approving the project proposal and the engineering feasibility report. Shortly thereafter, the State Planning Commission approved the proposal for utilization of the World Bank’s loan. The Construction Commission of the Shanghai Municipal Government approved the initial engineering design of SSPII. The investment of SSPII was estimated at about 5 billion RMB yuan, including a loan of $250 million from the World Bank.

Service area

The service area of SSPII mainly covers the southern area of Zhaojiagou in the Pudong New Area, the areas of Xuhui and Luwan Districts in Puxi and Wujing-Minhang. The total service area is approximately 272 square kilometers.
